Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior made a controversial call against PSG in the Champions League last 16 first leg. He decided to drop David Sanchez and start Filip Jorgensen.
Sanchez has established himself as the number one goalkeeper. However, he took that risk because of Jorgensen’s ball-playing ability.
Rosenior wanted a goalkeeper who was swift on his feet because he wanted to bypass PSG’s relentless pressing. However, that decision backfired massively.
The current Champions League holders crushed the Blues in a 5-2 win. It gives them a healthy cushion before they travel to Stamford Bridge for the second leg next week.
Now, Chelsea will host Newcastle United in their Premier League clash on Saturday. And, before the game, Liam Rosenior conducted his press conference, where he was asked about his decision.
Rosenior seemed to back his decision that he made against PSG. The Chelsea boss said:
“It is more about my decision for each game”.
However, Rosenior also praised Sanchez during the press conference, saying:
“Robert Sanchez is one of the best goalkeepers in the league”.
So, if he goes by the decisions he makes on the day of the game, it is still unclear whether he will pick Jorgensen or Sanchez in between the sticks for the Newcastle game.
David Sanchez was heavily criticised for his performance in Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
So, Rosenior subsequently handed Filip Jorgensen a start against Aston Villa, and the Blues defeated the Villans by 4-1.
But his mistake in the 74th minute of the game that led to PSG’s third goal could prove to be costly for the Blues.
Soon after the third goal, Chelsea collapsed and gave away a three-goal advantage to the French champions.
Now, they will have a mountain to climb when they meet PSG at Stamford Bridge in the second leg.
