Rodri has become one of the most important figures in Manchester City’s recent success. So, it is no surprise that he is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world.
He joined City from Atletico Madrid back in 2019. Since then, he has developed into a complete midfielder. Also, he even won the Ballon d’Or in 2024. That shows the level he has reached.
However, there is now some uncertainty around his future. His current contract has less than 18 months remaining.
Recently, Rodri spoke about his future during an interview with the Spanish radio station Onda Cero (via the Mirror). He opened up about a possible return to Spain. He said:
“I’d like to return, yes, obviously. For me, La Liga is where I started. I still follow it, it’s true not as much as before, but I still follow it.”
So, that has already caught attention. A move back to Spain is clearly something he is thinking about. Also, he admitted that the Premier League has been demanding.
Rodri has been playing at the highest level for several years now. At the same time, he made another important point. He said it would be difficult to turn down the biggest clubs in the world. He said:
“Right now I’m free, well, obviously I have a year left on my contract, obviously there will be a point where we’ll have to sit down and talk, have a conversation.
“No, I mean, there have been many players who have gone down that path, right? And especially not directly, but over time. I mean, for me, you can’t turn down the best clubs in the world.
“They have a fanbase that really goes all out for them, and for me, the Bernabeu is always incredible, a stadium that’s very imposing.”
So, while there is no immediate move, the door has clearly been left open. If Real Madrid decide to act, this could become a major situation in the coming months.
