FIFA are preparing for a major change ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The governing body wants to improve the flow of the game.
So, several new rules have now been introduced. These changes are aimed at reducing time-wasting and improving decision-making.
Also, FIFA want more control during matches. That is why some strict measures have been added.
One of the key changes involves substitutions. Players will now have only 10 seconds to leave the pitch.
If they take longer, their replacement must wait one minute before entering. So, the team will briefly play with fewer players.
There is also a new rule for restarts. Throw-ins and goal kicks must be taken within five seconds.
If players delay, possession will be handed to the opposition. So, there is no room for slowing the game down.
Medical situations have also been addressed. Any player receiving treatment must leave the pitch.
They must wait one minute before returning. However, this does not apply if the injury came from a carded foul.
VAR has also been expanded. Officials can now review second yellow cards that lead to a red.
Also, wrongly awarded corner kicks can be checked. So, more decisions will now come under review.
Another important change involves communication with referees. Only the captain will be allowed to speak to the referee. If other players crowd the official, they will be shown a yellow card.
So, FIFA are clearly trying to bring more discipline and speed into the game ahead of the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
