Virgil van Dijk did not hold back after Liverpool’s latest setback. The captain delivered a brutally honest assessment of the team’s season.
However, the defeat to PSG has pushed frustration to a new level. Liverpool now face a huge task in the Champions League.
Meanwhile, the 2-0 loss in Paris could have been worse. Arne Slot admitted PSG might have scored five or six goals.
At the same time, this result continues a worrying trend. It marked Liverpool’s 16th defeat of the season in all competitions.
They have now lost three games in a row. Defeats against Brighton and Manchester City had already raised concerns.
As a result, pressure continues to build around the squad. Performances have lacked consistency. Van Dijk made that clear in his comments. He said (via The Guardian):
“To lose 16 games in the season is unacceptable. We are losing too many games, the performances have just not been good and we are struggling to find consistency.”
Meanwhile, he refused to make excuses. He accepted the situation and called on the team to improve quickly. However, one line stood out more than the rest. Van Dijk said:
“Things will eventually always come to an end, including my time at a certain point.”
That statement has raised fresh questions about his future at the club. At the same time, he insisted the focus must remain on the team. He believes Liverpool can still respond.
He pointed to the famous comeback against Barcelona in 2019. That night saw Liverpool overturn a three-goal deficit.
However, he admitted this challenge could be even bigger. PSG are currently one of the best teams in Europe.
Van Dijk admitted the team must improve. He said they need a better plan to create chances in the second leg. Still, he ended on a note of belief. He reminded everyone of the club’s identity.
