Aston Villa are preparing for another season in Europe.
This is after a sixth place finish in the 2024/25 campaign.
It could have been so much better for Villa, having lost 2-0 to 15th place Manchester United on the final day.
Despite this, it was still a season to be happy about for Villa.
It was their first Champions League season since the tournament’s rebrand in 1992, their first European cup campaign since 1982/83.
Ollie Watkins was once again productive in front of goal and the club unearthed a gem in youngster Morgan Rogers.
They had a famous night at Villa Park in the Champions League, Jhon Durán‘s goal securing a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich.
Whilst there have been many positives about their season, some played have struggled with their performances.
As the season went on, Villa fans became increasingly frustrated with right-back Matty Cash.
“We just need the fans to be with us”, said Cash in response to social media criticism during an interview late on in the season.
He also discussed the social media side of football fandom.
”We don’t need them against us. We need them supporting us
“Sometimes you see things on social media and you think, just stick with us.”
However, it seems that Villa manager Unai Emery is looking to bolster the squad available to him in all four competitions next season.
This could have a major impact on Cash’s minutes next season and ultimately his future as a player for the club.
Aston Villa targeting £21 million Bundesliga defender
It has now been reported that Villa are planning to sign RB Leipzig right-back Lutsharel Geertruida for a fee of £21 million.
Geertruida is known for his versatility. Whilst his main position is right-back, he is also known to have played as a centre-back or defensive midfielder.
Previously linked with a move to Liverpool, Emery will hope that they can beat the champions to the signing of Geertruida.
