Manchester City are firmly in the title race. After Arsenal’s win against Newcastle United, the Gunners have regained the top spot in the Premier League table.
However, the Citizens have a game in hand. So, the title race is firmly. But Manchester City are facing a major fixture headache as the season enters its final stretch.
Pep Guardiola’s side remain in contention on multiple fronts. They are chasing a domestic treble, but that success has created a new problem.
City will have to play three matches in the space of six or seven days during the final weeks of the campaign. That has raised concerns inside the club.
According to The Sun, Manchester City have asked the Premier League to help ease their fixture congestion by adjusting upcoming matches.
However, rival clubs do not believe City should receive any special treatment. Now, City must rearrange two Premier League games due to their progress in domestic competitions.
Their home clash with Crystal Palace was delayed because of the Carabao Cup final, while the trip to Bournemouth now clashes with the FA Cup final weekend.
Premier League rules state that postponed matches should be played in the original order. However, one option under consideration involves reversing those fixtures to reduce the strain.
Other clubs will not support any change to the rules. As things stand, City may have to play Crystal Palace on May 13, followed by the FA Cup final the next weekend.
The away trip to Bournemouth could take place on May 19. UEFA will not allow it to clash with the Europa League final, which further limits available dates.
So, Manchester City continue to push for a solution, but for now, they must prepare for a demanding run-in.
