Mauricio Pochettino has finally addressed the reasons behind his departure from Chelsea, and his explanation points towards deeper issues within the club’s structure.

The Argentine had initially believed the project was moving in the right direction, especially after a strong finish to the 2023-24 season.

Chelsea secured a return to European football and reached a domestic cup final under his guidance.

From the outside, it looked like progress. However, things behind the scenes did not align with that trajectory.

Speaking on The Overlap with Gary Neville, Pochettino admitted that the vision he had when he arrived did not match what followed. He said:

“What I understood, didn’t happen after. Maybe I was wrong.”

He explained that when he took charge, Chelsea were sitting 12th in the Premier League and not involved in any European competition.

The club were also undergoing major changes after a shift in ownership. In his view, building something stable required time and clear priorities.

Pochettino believed the team had started to show real progress. Chelsea finished sixth after a strong run at the end of the season and reached the Carabao Cup final.

The Blues also competed in the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City. Despite falling short in those matches, he felt the team were heading in the right direction.

However, that belief was not shared across the hierarchy. He made it clear that once the club’s direction no longer matched his own vision, he chose to walk away. He said:

“But when things didn’t match what was our vision, we said it’s better to split.”

Pochettino also pointed towards a broader issue within modern football. He stressed that clubs cannot rely only on data and financial models.

The current USA manager believes that the human side of the game still plays a crucial role. He added that emotional connection between players and coaches remains essential.

His comments suggest that differences over philosophy and decision-making ultimately led to his exit, rather than results on the pitch.
