Iran’s participation in the 2026 World Cup had come under serious doubt in recent weeks, with geopolitical tensions raising questions over their involvement.
The situation escalated after airstrikes involving the United States and Israel, which created uncertainty around whether the team would even travel.
The issue gained further attention during FIFA’s congress in Vancouver. Iran’s football officials did not attend, which added to the confusion.
Reports also suggested visa complications affected members of their delegation, increasing speculation about their status. There were even suggestions of alternative plans.
Some senior figures in Iran hinted that matches might move to Mexico, while others questioned whether participation itself would remain possible.
Despite all that noise, FIFA moved to shut down the uncertainty during the congress.
Speaking in his address, Gianni Infantino made the organisation’s position clear and dismissed any doubts over the situation. He said (via Sky Sports):
“Let me start at the outset by confirming straight away, for those who maybe want to say something else or write something else, that of course Iran will be participating at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
“And of course, Iran will play in the United States of America. The reason for that is simple, because we have to unite. We have to bring people together.”
That statement ends all speculation. Iran will compete in the tournament and will play their matches in the United States as originally planned, with no changes to the current schedule.
Gianni Infantino had already made his stance clear earlier, insisting there was no alternative plan. He said:
“There is no plan B, C or D – there is only plan A.”
Iran will now begin their campaign against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15, before facing Belgium and Egypt in the group stage.
