Manchester City are preparing for life after Pep Guardiola, following reports that the Spaniard will leave the club after the final game of the season.
The City manager reportedly informed players about his decision during a late-night group call before the crucial clash against Bournemouth.
Now, attention has quickly shifted towards who could replace Guardiola at the Etihad. Manchester City are now close to appointing Enzo Maresca as the replacement for Guardiola.
The situation has also created fresh tension between Manchester City and Chelsea.
According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea are prepared to demand compensation if City appoint Maresca as Guardiola’s successor this summer.
The report claims Stamford Bridge officials remain furious over allegations that Maresca held talks with Manchester City while still managing Chelsea earlier this season.
Now, with the Italian expected to replace Guardiola, Chelsea are reportedly considering legal action if an agreement over compensation cannot be reached.
The London club could even file an official complaint with the Premier League if negotiations break down.
Maresca left Chelsea in January after relations behind the scenes reportedly deteriorated badly.
The Italian skipped media duties following a draw against Bournemouth and his position quickly became untenable after a poor run of results.
Chelsea had previously sat second in the Premier League before their collapse during the second half of the season.
Reports also revealed growing tension between Maresca and Chelsea’s medical department regarding player management during matches.
Despite the difficult ending, Maresca still enjoyed success at Stamford Bridge.
The former manager won both the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup during his spell with Chelsea.
Meanwhile, speculation linking him with Manchester City never completely disappeared because of his close relationship with Guardiola.
Now, with Guardiola reportedly preparing to leave the Etihad, Chelsea fear Manchester City could finally move for the Italian manager.
