UEFA announce major change to Ballon d’Or 2026

England captain Harry Kane is also among the favourites to win this year’s award.

The Ballon d’Or remains the most prestigious individual award in football. Every year, the ceremony attracts the biggest names in the sport as the world’s best players gather for one of football’s grandest nights.

For decades, the event has been closely associated with Paris. Apart from a brief spell in Zurich during the FIFA merger between 2010 and 2015, the ceremony has almost always taken place in the French capital.

In fact, organisers even hosted the 2017 edition at the Eiffel Tower. However, UEFA have now decided to make a significant change ahead of this year’s ceremony.

The change comes as the Ballon d’Or prepares to celebrate its 70th anniversary. Organisers wanted the occasion to carry historical importance while also honouring one of football’s greatest legends.

Meanwhile, officials have also hinted that this may not be the last time the ceremony moves away from France in the future.

According to the official announcement, the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place in London for the first time in history to honour Stanley Matthews.

The Englishman became the first-ever winner of the award back in 1956. Organisers described London as a “symbolic” choice of venue, while the ceremony itself will take place on October 26.

Matthews remains one of the most iconic figures in English football history. He spent most of his career at Stoke City and Blackpool.

Nicknamed ‘The Magician’, Matthews made more than 800 appearances during his career and scored 80 goals. He also famously won the FA Cup with Blackpool in 1953.

Meanwhile, UEFA officials also suggested that the Ballon d’Or could continue exploring venues outside France in the coming years.

PSG star Ousmane Dembele is currently the reigning men’s Ballon d’Or holder after winning the Champions League last season. Meanwhile, Aitana Bonmati remains the current women’s holder.

England captain Harry Kane is also among the favourites to win this year’s award after scoring 61 goals in 51 games.
