Some contract situations carry more weight than others.
And few carry as much weight right now as the one surrounding Rodri at Manchester City.
One year remaining.
A Real Madrid presidential election this weekend.
Read between the lines and it’s one of the most telling non-answers in recent football.
Rodri confirms Manchester City future decision delayed until after World Cup
According to the BBC, Rodri confirmed that he isn’t making any decisions until after the World Cup.
And then he delivered the line that should make Manchester City supporters sit up.
“I’m very calm, I know exactly where I stand, and I’ll tell you that perhaps if there hadn’t been a World Cup, things might be different now.”
Things might be different now.
In the context of everything surrounding his situation, that line carries enormous significance.
The Real Madrid dimension adds the most recent twist.
Enrique Riquelme is challenging incumbent Florentino Perez in this weekend’s presidential election.
And Riquelme has publicly identified Rodri as a priority target should he win.
Rodri joined Manchester City from Atlético Madrid in 2019 and has been arguably the most important player of the entire Guardiola era, claiming the Ballon d’Or in 2024.
His cruciate ligament tear in September 2024 robbed him of significant months.
And questions about his full recovery ahead of the World Cup have been a constant presence throughout the latter stages of this season.
He has played down the injury concerns.
“When a player is approaching the final stage of his contract, it’s normal for names to be mentioned,” he said.
“I won’t give too much importance to rumours about my future, it’s part of the job.”
Everything about his public demeanour is calm.
But the words “perhaps if there hadn’t been a World Cup, things might be different now” don’t come from nowhere.
They suggest a player who has thought carefully about his next move.
Who knows what he wants.
And who is simply asking the world to wait a few more weeks before finding out.
For a club already navigating the Guardiola succession and a summer of significant squad upheaval, losing Rodri on top of everything else would represent the most seismic departure of all.
The World Cup ends in mid-July.
And Rodri’s answer is coming.
