Real Madrid have officially responded after presidential candidate accused the club of irregularities ahead of next week’s elections.
The situation has significantly increased tensions surrounding the club’s first contested presidential race in almost two decades.
Enrique Riquelme recently questioned the transparency of the election process and raised concerns regarding the handling of postal votes before the June 7 election.
The 37-year-old businessman also suggested that Florentino Perez’s campaign may have received preferential access to the club’s official member census.
Those accusations quickly forced a public response from the club. The Real Madrid Electoral Board released an official statement denying all allegations of electoral misconduct.
The board stated that neither candidate had received access to the electoral census.
Instead, Real Madrid explained that the club only acts as a neutral intermediary by distributing campaign material to approximately 100,000 voting members.
The board also stated that Riquelme was personally informed about the process when he officially registered his candidacy.
Real Madrid additionally responded to concerns regarding the postal voting system.
According to the statement, both campaigns can now appoint representatives to monitor the storage areas where postal ballots remain secured.
The Electoral Board confirmed that representatives from both sides may remain continuously near the entrance of those high-security rooms.
The statement also explained that the areas already operate under 24-hour video surveillance while warning that all monitoring must respect privacy regulations.
The growing tension highlights the importance of the upcoming election following Real Madrid’s trophyless 2025-26 season.
Florentino Perez faces his first serious presidential challenge since 2006.
Riquelme has built his campaign around promises of sporting reform, including the possible appointment of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
Meanwhile, Perez continues campaigning under the slogan “Much history to be made” while relying heavily on his record of six Champions League titles during his presidency.
