Ex-Premier League owner steps down after allegations

David Sullivan resigns as West Ham chairman with immediate effect ahead of serious historic allegations.

Some exits from football clubs are planned.

Others are gradual, yet they have a sense of inevitability.

And some arrive suddenly, in circumstances nobody anticipated.

Leaving a club already in crisis with yet another layer of uncertainty to navigate.

With the timing and the allegations surrounding his departure make this one of the most significant stories English football has produced in years.

David Sullivan resigns as West Ham chairman with immediate effect ahead of serious historic allegations

According to the BBC, Sullivan stepped down from his role as joint chairman of West Ham United with immediate effect on Sunday, following a joint investigation by BBC Panorama and The Times newspaper into his behaviour.

The Panorama broadcast is due to air on Monday.

West Ham confirmed the club had been “made aware of the impending publication of serious historic allegations” concerning Sullivan.

Sullivan himself issued a statement denying everything.

“I categorically deny these claims,” he wrote.

“The decades-old allegations concerning my personal life are factually incorrect and entirely false.”

His reason for resigning despite that denial was framed as an act of protection toward the club.

“At what is already a challenging and important time for the club, I refuse to allow personal matters concerning me to become an unnecessary distraction or a source of instability,” Sullivan said.

He has also resigned as a director.

West Ham confirmed that none of the allegations relate to the club or any of its operations.

However, interim chief executive Karim Virani will continue to lead day-to-day operations while the future board structure is determined.

Yet, the context in which this falls is deeply significant.

Sullivan had been West Ham’s largest single shareholder since the death of his business partner David Gold in January 2023.

Their 16-year tenure covered some of the most consequential moments in West Ham’s recent history.

The move from Upton Park to the London Stadium in 2016.

A Conference League trophy in 2023, the club’s first major honour since the 1980 FA Cup.

And a sixth-place Premier League finish in 2021.

But the relationship between the ownership and the fanbase had deteriorated badly in recent seasons.

With supporters staging multiple protests during the 2025-26 campaign calling for both Sullivan and Baroness Brady to resign.

Brady departed her role as vice-chair on 15 April.

Sullivan has now followed.

And the backdrop to his exit couldn’t be more turbulent.
