Some conversations in football camps stay private for years.
And some make complete sense of everything you’ve been watching.
At the heart of France’s 2026 World Cup preparations sits a dynamic that few outside the camp fully understood until now.
Ousmane Dembele holds conversations with Kylian Mbappe about his Real Madrid struggles
According to L’Equipe, Ousmane Dembele has held discussions with Kylian Mbappe about his difficult season at Real Madrid.
Conversations that reflect a shift in the balance of power within the France dressing room that nobody could have predicted twelve months ago.
The broader story is a remarkable one.
Dembele arrived at the 2026 World Cup having just won the Ballon d’Or.
He led PSG to back-to-back Champions League titles, establishing himself as the best player in club football on the planet.
Mbappe has spent the same period struggling through the most turbulent season of his career at Real Madrid.
A dressing room in chaos, a fanbase that turned against him with over 30 million people signing a petition for his exit.
The gap between where both men were twelve months ago and where they are now couldn’t be starker.
And Dembele, according to L’Equipe, didn’t shy away from addressing it directly.
He allegedly told Mbappe to work more defensively, if France were to succeed in the World Cup.
However, for someone who had the least defensive contributions in La Liga, this wouldn’t be something new that’s been said to Mbappe.
Especially as he’s behind every single player including goalkeepers with six, this season.
Dembele’s growing influence within the France camp is described as significant.
Yet, his relationship with Mbappe has always been built on mutual respect.
That’s precisely why the conversations landed.
Mbappe, for his part, arrives at the World Cup carrying something to prove.
Especially as the narrative around him has been defined by the chaos surrounding him rather than the quality he’s delivered.
France go into this tournament as one of the favourites.
Will they win it? Who knows.
