Chelsea star confronts US police during World Cup warm-up match

Hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will become the biggest World Cup in football history.

However, the buildup has not been completely smooth. Concerns surrounding security, immigration policies and fan safety have regularly dominated discussion in recent months.

Several supporters travelling to the United States have already raised worries regarding policing and stadium security before the tournament officially begins.

Those concerns returned again during Ecuador’s final warm-up match before their Group E opener against Ivory Coast.

Ecuador are heading into the World Cup with growing confidence. Meanwhile, expectations around the squad continue to rise after an impressive unbeaten run ahead of the tournament.

The South American side have now avoided defeat in their last 19 matches. During that period, they held both Morocco and the Netherlands to draws. They also secured a notable victory over Argentina last September.

Therefore, there is increasing belief that Ecuador could become one of the surprise teams at this year’s competition across the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Their final warm-up game also appeared straightforward on paper. Ecuador comfortably defeated Guatemala 3-0 at Ohio Stadium on Sunday night.

Jordy Caicedo, Nilson Angulo and Pervis Estupinan all found the net during a dominant performance. However, the football itself quickly became a secondary topic after an ugly moment late in the match.

A Guatemala supporter entered the pitch during the closing stages. Several US police officers then moved in to stop the fan.

Videos from inside the stadium showed the individual being taken aggressively to the ground as officers attempted to detain him.

That moment immediately drew attention from players on the pitch. Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo stepped in and confronted the police officers over their handling of the situation.

The Ecuador international attempted to shield the supporter while also arguing with officers during the heated incident.

According to footage shared online, supporters inside the stadium reacted negatively towards the police response and booed the aggressive intervention.

Meanwhile, social media reaction largely praised Caicedo for stepping into the situation. No official statement regarding the incident has been released at the time of writing.

Sunday night’s scenes have also revived wider concerns surrounding security and policing ahead of the World Cup.

On the same day as Ecuador’s friendly victory, a shooting near England’s planned training base in Kansas City left nine people injured.

Therefore, concerns surrounding safety at the tournament continue to attract attention just days before the competition officially begins.
