Xabi Alonso makes decision on key Chelsea star

Alonso wants a closer look at the player before making a final call.

Chelsea are preparing for a crucial season under new head coach Xabi Alonso. The Blues missed out on European football and now face a major rebuild as Alonso evaluates his squad ahead of the new campaign.

They are also looking to strengthen several positions during the summer window as they try to avoid repeating past mistakes.

However, incoming signings are not the only issue on the agenda. Alonso must also decide which current players fit into his long-term plans. One player facing an uncertain future is Mamadou Sarr.

The 20-year-old defender has attracted interest from elsewhere after a frustrating spell with Chelsea.

According to reports, Bundesliga side RB Leipzig have expressed interest in signing the Senegal international this summer.

At this stage, it remains unclear whether Leipzig would prefer a permanent transfer or a loan deal. Sarr returned to Chelsea after the club recalled him from Strasbourg.

However, opportunities remained limited. He played just 294 minutes across six appearances in all competitions. That lack of game time has naturally raised questions about his future.

Chelsea are currently exploring defensive reinforcements with Premier League experience. As a result, competition for places could become even stronger before the transfer window closes.

According to Jeunes Footeux, the Chelsea manager has informed club officials that he wants to assess Sarr during pre-season before deciding whether the defender should stay at Stamford Bridge next season.

Sarr has remained active at the international level. He featured four times for Senegal during and after the March international break.

Sarr will now have the opportunity to impress during pre-season and prove that he deserves a place in Chelsea’s plans. For now, Chelsea have not approved an exit.

Instead, Alonso wants a closer look at the young defender before making a final call on whether he stays, leaves permanently or heads out on loan for the 2026-27 campaign.
