FIFA officially suspend country from all football activity

Football’s world governing body regularly expects its member associations to operate independently and without outside influence.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has once again demonstrated football’s ability to unite nations from every corner of the globe.

While the tournament continues to produce unforgettable moments on the pitch, the governing body has also remained focused on protecting the governance of the game away from it.

Football’s world governing body regularly expects its member associations to operate independently and without outside influence.

Whenever those principles come under threat, the governing body has shown a willingness to intervene, even if that means imposing severe sanctions on national associations.

Those powers have rarely been exercised throughout FIFA’s history. However, another member nation has now found itself facing one of the organisation’s toughest punishments.

FIFA has officially suspended Nepal from all football activity with immediate effect after determining that third-party interference breached its statutes.

FIFA confirmed the Bureau of the Council imposed the suspension because of “flagrant violations of the FIFA Statutes linked to interference by a third party.”

The decision follows a lengthy dispute involving the All Nepal Football Association and the country’s sporting council. They previously suspended the federation before later reversing that decision.

The suspension immediately strips the All Nepal Football Association of its membership rights until further notice.

Nepal’s national teams and clubs can no longer compete in international competitions organised by FIFA or the Asian Football Confederation.

The sanction also blocks Nepal from accessing FIFA and AFC development programmes, financial support, coaching courses and training opportunities.

FIFA has additionally instructed other member associations to avoid sporting contact with Nepalese teams while the suspension remains in force.

Despite the severity of the punishment, FIFA has left the door open for Nepal’s return.

The governing body confirmed the suspension could end before the next FIFA Congress if the issues leading to the decision are fully resolved. The decision represents a major setback for Nepal football.
