Robert Lewandowski set to join Chicago Fire as MLS move confirmed following Barcelona exit

According to Fabrizio Romano, Robert Lewandowski is travelling to the United States to negotiate with Chicago Fire, flying alongside his agent Pini Zahavi to discuss terms and study the club’s facilities as the move edges toward completion.

The 37-year-old left Barcelona as a free agent when his contract expired on June 30.

The chapter at Camp Nou is closed.

What comes next is happening now, and it’s happening in MLS.

The process has reached this point after a summer in which multiple options were explored.

Fenerbahce showed early interest.

AC Milan and Juventus both explored the possibility before deciding the financial demands were too high.

Porto made contact.

Saudi Arabia were always in the background.

But the MLS has emerged as the destination Lewandowski and Zahavi are taking most seriously.

Chicago Fire head coach Gregg Berhalter has previously made no secret of his admiration for the player.

And the club’s desire to sign him has been known throughout the 2025-26 season.

A contract offer of two to three years is understood to be on the table.

For Lewandowski, the decision comes down to more than finances.

At 37, with a World Cup ongoing in the country he’s flying into, the question is whether he wants to prolong his career in an environment that offers longevity without the brutal physical demands of Europe’s elite leagues.

His family are deeply embedded in Spain.

His football heart is still beating for competition.

Chicago Fire can offer him both the spotlight and the stability.

However, the most decorated European striker of his generation may be about to write his final chapter in the most unexpected city of all.
