Chelsea are reshaping their defence after selling Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid earlier this summer.
Replacing the Spain international has become one of the club’s priorities as Xabi Alonso continues building his squad for the new campaign.
The Blues have already moved for Atalanta full-back Marco Palestra, but Chelsea are not limiting themselves to one option.
Instead, they continue to assess the market for another left-sided defender capable of competing for a regular starting place. That search has now taken them back to La Liga.
According to MARCA, Chelsea are considering a move for Rayo Vallecano defender Pep Chavarría, with initial contact already taking place between the two clubs.
The 28-year-old has quietly established himself as one of La Liga’s most reliable left-backs.
Although he has never earned a senior Spain call-up, Chavarría has made more than 100 league appearances.
He has contributed two goals and six assists while operating in several positions on the left flank.
The Spaniard also played a key role in Rayo Vallecano’s run to the UEFA Conference League final last season.
Chavarría featured in every knockout match from the last 16 onwards before the Spanish side lost to Crystal Palace in the final.
Chelsea are not alone in the race. Bayer Leverkusen are also monitoring the defender’s situation ahead of the summer window.
Rayo Vallecano remain in a strong negotiating position. Chavarría signed a new contract until 2030, although reports suggest his release clause is worth around £21 million.
🚨 Chelsea have identified Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarría as a potential replacement for Marc Cucurella.
Initial contact has already taken place to assess the feasibility of a deal, with the Blues closely monitoring the 28-year-old.
