Some club statements are routine.
An end-of-season review.
Perhaps, a carefully worded expression of regret.
This is not one of those statements.
Chelsea have broken their silence on Enzo Maresca’s departure, and the details are extraordinary.
Chelsea release bombshell statement revealing Maresca resigned to join Manchester City
According to Chelsea FC’s official website, the club have published a detailed account of the circumstances surrounding Maresca’s departure on January 1, 2026.
Revealing that the Italian manager informed the club in autumn 2025 that he wished to succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, before abruptly resigning from his position in December.
The statement holds nothing back.
“In Autumn last year, the Club was informed by our former Head Coach that there might be an opportunity for him to succeed Pep Guardiola at the end of the season,” it reads.
“It became clear to us that it was his strong desire to succeed Guardiola and that he was fully committed to pursuing the opportunity, despite the fact he was under a long-term contract which he had no right to terminate.”
The timeline is damning.
Maresca had only arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2024.
However, within months, his attention had shifted entirely elsewhere.
“In December 2025, our Head Coach unexpectedly and abruptly resigned from his position,” the statement continues.
“Obviously, we felt let down as we believed that his head and heart were focused on another club and another opportunity, despite having just arrived at Chelsea the year before.”
The club makes clear they had no choice but to act.
Thus, no club wants to change their manager mid-season.
But retaining a man whose commitment to the project had fundamentally collapsed was simply not an option.
The fallout has financial consequences too.
The acknowledgement that City must pay a sum, and that Maresca himself carries personal financial liability, is striking.
Chelsea have had their say.
And they’ve said it loudly.
