AS Monaco have turned to a former Chelsea star after an underwhelming campaign in Ligue 1.

The Principality club finished seventh with 54 points and missed out on Champions League qualification. They only secured a place in next season’s UEFA Europa Conference League.

The disappointing season has already triggered major changes behind the scenes.

The biggest decision, however, arrived on the touchline as they parted ways with Sebastien Pocognoli. So, the club looked for a new manager to lead a new era.

Monaco have handed the responsibility to a coach who enjoyed success both as a player and on the sidelines before returning to European football.

AS Monaco officially confirmed the appointment of former Chelsea defender Filipe Luis as their new head coach. The Brazilian has signed a contract with the Ligue 1 club until June 2028.

Filipe Luis arrives after an impressive spell with CR Flamengo.

During his time in charge, he guided the Brazilian club to the 2024 Brazilian Cup, the 2025 Brazilian Super Cup, the 2025 Campeonato Carioca, the 2025 Brazilian Championship and the 2025 Copa Libertadores.

He also received the South American Coach of the Year award in 2025. Before taking charge of Flamengo’s first team, Filipe Luis began his coaching career in the club’s academy.

He quickly impressed there and won the U20 Intercontinental Cup before earning promotion to the senior side.

The 40-year-old also built an outstanding playing career before moving into management.

He made 333 appearances for Atletico Madrid and won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and two Europa League titles.

He also spent a season at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho, where he lifted the Premier League title in 2015.
