Real Madrid endured another disappointing season. They finished second in La Liga behind Barcelona and failed to win a major trophy.
Their European campaign ended in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Meanwhile, their Copa del Rey journey finished in the round of 16.
Despite those struggles, Kylian Mbappe enjoyed a remarkable individual season. The Frenchman scored 42 goals in all competitions and netted 25 league goals.
The disappointing campaign ultimately triggered major changes at the club. Real Madrid responded by appointing Jose Mourinho on a three-year contract to lead a rebuild.
The club also moved quickly in the transfer market. Los Blancos secured Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal worth an initial €55 million.
Real Madrid also signed Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan for €20 million. In addition, Bernardo Silva and Ibrahima Konate arrived as free agents from Manchester City and Liverpool respectively.
However, Mourinho appears keen to make further additions before the transfer window closes. Midfield remains an area that could still receive attention despite the club’s busy summer.
Meanwhile, Napoli continue to build on their recent success under Antonio Conte. The Italian champions enjoyed another strong campaign after winning the Scudetto in 2024-25.
The club are now focused on protecting the core of their squad. Napoli are prioritising contract renewals as interest in several key players continues to grow.
According to Nicolo Schira, Jose Mourinho has asked for information on Scott McTominay for Real Madrid in recent weeks, although no bid has been submitted.
The report also states that McTominay rejected two huge offers from Saudi clubs in recent days. His priority remains staying at Napoli.
Mourinho’s admiration for the midfielder dates back to their time together at Manchester United.
McTominay enjoyed another excellent campaign during the 2025-26 season. He scored 14 goals and provided three assists in all competitions.
Those numbers followed an outstanding first season in Italy after joining Napoli in 2024.
The Scotland international scored 13 goals during the 2024-25 campaign. He also delivered five match-winning goals during Napoli’s title-winning season.
His performances earned him Serie A’s Most Valuable Player award. Since then, he has established himself as one of Napoli’s most important players.
For now, though, both Napoli and the player appear aligned over the future. That could make any potential move difficult for Real Madrid despite Mourinho’s admiration.
