Sunderland had a remarkable return to the Premier League under Regis Le Bris. The Black Cats secured a seventh-place finish and booked a place in the Europa League for the first time since 1973.
That achievement has forced the club to move quickly in the transfer market as preparations continue for a demanding campaign across multiple competitions.
Despite interest from Chelsea, Sunderland have also resisted approaches for captain Granit Xhaka and remain determined to keep him at the Stadium of Light.
The club’s latest move, however, focuses on adding experience rather than protecting existing assets.
That approach has led Sunderland to secure the services of former Paris Saint-Germain defender Thomas Meunier on a free transfer. His contract with Lille expired at the end of June
The Belgium international has officially signed a two-year deal at the Stadium of Light. He will officially join up with his new teammates in early August.
Meunier arrives with more than 550 senior appearances and 83 international caps to his name. His arrival also adds valuable European experience to a squad preparing for continental football.
The 34-year-old spent four successful years at Paris Saint-Germain between 2016 and 2020.
During that spell, he lifted three Ligue 1 titles, three Coupe de France trophies and three Coupe de la Ligue crowns. He also featured prominently during PSG’s run to the 2020 Champions League final.
After leaving France, Meunier enjoyed spells with Borussia Dortmund, Trabzonspor and Lille before making the move to Wearside.
His most recent campaign saw him produce consistent performances for Lille and earn selection in Belgium’s World Cup squad.
Sunderland will now hope his leadership and experience can help guide the club through its long-awaited return to European competition.
