Rodri endured a difficult 2025-26 club campaign after recurring knee and hamstring problems disrupted his season with Manchester City.
The 30-year-old struggled for regular playing time and featured in only one of City’s final six matches.
However, his fortunes changed dramatically when he joined Spain for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Rodri rediscovered his best form on the international stage and played 726 minutes across eight matches during the tournament.
The midfielder played a crucial role as Spain went all the way and defeated Argentina in the World Cup final. Also, his performances earned him the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament.
Now, attention has turned back towards his club future as he enters the final 12 months of his Manchester City contract.
His current deal expires in June 2027, creating uncertainty over whether he will remain at the Etihad Stadium beyond next season.
Manchester City have already placed a new long-term contract proposal on the table, reportedly running until 2029.
However, Rodri has delayed talks, which has continued to fuel speculation about a possible move away from the club.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Rodri would love to return to Spain and has dreamed of joining Real Madrid for several months.
However, Romano also revealed that Florentino Perez has blocked any deal or negotiations for the midfielder this summer.
That stance has kept a potential move to Real Madrid cold despite Rodri’s interest in returning to Spain.
Manchester City have therefore remained focused on securing his long-term future instead of allowing uncertainty to continue.
Their renewal proposal has reportedly been on the table since April as they push to extend his stay.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s position means no negotiations are currently taking place over a summer transfer.
As a result, Rodri’s immediate future still appears tied to Manchester City unless the situation changes before the transfer window closes.

At same time, Florentino Pérez has always blocked this deal or any negotiations for Rodri this summer.
