Chelsea set sights on Barcelona defender

Chelsea could face a difficult task if they decide to pursue the defender.

Chelsea are continuing to strengthen their defence ahead of the new Premier League season.

Xabi Alonso wants more balance on the left side of his back line as he reshapes the squad during his first transfer window at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have already reinforced several areas of the squad this summer.

However, another defensive addition remains under consideration as Chelsea assess players capable of fitting multiple tactical systems. One name has now moved onto the club’s shortlist.

According to CaughtOffside, Barcelona defender Gerard Martin has emerged as a serious target for Chelsea.

The Blues want Martin because of his ability to play at left-back and as a left-sided centre-back.

But Chelsea are not alone in the race. AC Milan are also pushing to sign the 24-year-old and have reportedly increased their proposed offer after identifying him as a priority target.

The report states that Milan initially offered around €20M and are now prepared to raise that figure towards €35M. Barcelona would prefer to keep Martin.

Hansi Flick values the defender highly and has asked the club to resist approaches because of his reliability and ability to cover multiple defensive positions.

However, Barcelona have not completely ruled out a sale. Club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco are ready to consider a significant offer.

Chelsea have not submitted a formal bid, leaving Milan with an early advantage in negotiations.

That means the Blues must soon decide whether Martin is one of Alonso’s priority targets or simply another player being monitored.

The Spaniard remains under contract until June 2028, placing the Catalan club in a strong negotiating position.

Chelsea therefore face a difficult task if they decide to pursue the defender. There is no doubt Barcelona want to keep him unless a substantial offer changes their stance.
