Paris Saint-Germain have dominated European football over the past year, but one defeat in the transfer market has left the French champions searching for a response.
Luis Enrique guided PSG to another remarkable campaign, winning a historic sextuple and defending the UEFA Champions League before the club reshaped its squad this summer.
While several high-profile departures have helped balance the books, PSG have also remained active in the market as they continue building for the future.
However, one of their biggest transfer plans collapsed at the last moment. Real Madrid hijacked PSG’s move for Yan Diomande.
The French champions had already positioned themselves strongly for the highly-rated winger. But the Spanish giants reached a verbal agreement with RB Leipzig.
Now, the Ligue 1 champions are preparing their response.
According to El Nacional, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi wants to strike back by launching an ambitious move for Rodri, who is also a priority target for Real Madrid.
The report claims PSG are prepared to make an extraordinary financial proposal that could even triple any salary package offered by the Spanish giants.
Luis Enrique reportedly believes the Manchester City midfielder is the ideal player to strengthen his midfield.
The move is also viewed as an opportunity to respond after losing Diomande to Real Madrid. However, PSG still face a major obstacle.
The report states that Rodri’s preference is to return to Spain if he leaves Manchester City. And Real Madrid remain his favoured destination.
That leaves PSG relying on their financial strength to change the direction of the transfer battle.
The French champions are ready to offer significantly improved personal terms. And they are willing to spend heavily to challenge Madrid for the Spain international. For now, though, Rodri’s preference continues to favour Los Blancos.
