Liverpool continued their positive pre-season preparations with another victory under Andoni Iraola. The Reds defeated Wrexham 1-0 at Yankee Stadium thanks to Rio Ngumoha’s late winner.
However, the full-time celebrations quickly gave way to an incident involving several Liverpool players. The disagreement unfolded after the final whistle.
Players were applauding supporters when an animated exchange broke out on the pitch. The incident attracted attention as teammates attempted to calm the situation before everyone left the field.
According to BBC Sport, Curtis Jones became involved in a heated argument with Dominik Szoboszlai following Liverpool’s win over Wrexham.
Kostas Tsimikas also joined the exchange, with television footage showing the defender throwing the captain’s armband onto the ground during the confrontation.
The cause of the disagreement remains unclear. However, BBC Sport noted that Szoboszlai handed the captain’s armband to Tsimikas instead of Jones when he was substituted earlier in the match.
The incident has led to speculation, although no official explanation has been provided. Jones’ future has already been under discussion this summer.
Liverpool rejected a £21.7M offer from Inter Milan for the midfielder earlier in the transfer window. The academy graduate has only one year remaining on his current contract at Anfield.
Despite the transfer speculation, Iraola has publicly backed the midfielder.
The Liverpool manager recently described Jones as a “great, great player” and expressed his hope that the 25-year-old will remain at the club for the new season.
Liverpool will complete their pre-season tour of North America when they face Leeds United on Sunday.
