Some questions at pre-season press conferences get deflected easily.
And some carry enough weight that the manager’s every word is parsed the moment it leaves his mouth.
Rodri’s future is very much the second kind.
Real Madrid want him.
His contract is entering its final year.
And the speculation hasn’t stopped since the World Cup ended.
Yet in Hong Kong on Friday, Enzo Maresca was asked about it directly.
Enzo Maresca speaks out on Rodri’s future as Man City boss delivers measured response amidst Real Madrid links
According to Sky Sports, Manchester City head coach Maresca addressed the Rodri situation in a press conference ahead of tomorrow’s pre-season friendly against Inter Milan, speaking carefully, warmly and without committing to anything definitive.
The key lines from the City manager were these.
“The main focus for him when the season finished was the World Cup. Now, he enjoys some rest after that.”
He then added: “We didn’t have any conversations just focused on Rodri.”
And then, the line that every Real Madrid supporter will have noted immediately.
“I said in the first press conference that any manager in the world wants Rodri because he’s a top player, so it’s important for me, for the club, for everyone.”
He didn’t say Rodri is staying.
What he said is that the Ballon d’Or winner is on holiday, which is both true and entirely deliberate.
The framing gives Manchester City space.
A manager who openly acknowledged that “any manager in the world” would want his player is not making a bold statement of intent about keeping him.
He’s acknowledging the reality that surrounds one of the finest midfielders on the planet.
Rodri himself said before the World Cup that a decision on his future would wait until after the tournament.
Adding pointedly that “if there hadn’t been a World Cup, things might be different now.”
Those words have not been forgotten.
His contract at the Etihad runs until June 2027.
Manchester City hold the cards contractually.
Maresca’s final word on the subject was practical rather than possessive.
“Now, he needs his holiday, which is very important when we start to play every three days.”
The conversation, it seems, is still to come.
