Aston Villa have a hole to fill.
Youri Tielemans has gone.
Amadou Onana’s ACL rules him out until 2027.
Johan Manzambi has arrived but Unai Emery wants more.
And the player he has placed at the very top of his midfield wishlist comes from one of the most famous academies in the world.
Aston Villa prepare £30m bid for Barcelona’s Marc Bernal despite “untouchable” tag as Emery identifies 19-year-old as number one summer target
According to The Sun, Aston Villa are preparing a formal opening offer of £30 million for Bernal, with Emery having made the La Masia graduate his leading midfield priority and the club looking to test Barcelona’s resolve with a significant formal approach.
They have already rejected bids in the region of £25 million.
And Barcelona consider Bernal untouchable.
Hansi Flick has publicly called him “excellent.”
He signed a contract extension running until 2029 just last September, a deliberate act of protection from a club that knew interest was coming.
The case for the pursuit is clear even if it’s ambitious.
Bernal made 33 appearances across all competitions last season, contributing five goals and one assist as Barcelona lifted La Liga.
He returned from an ACL injury, and did so with the composure and quality of a player considerably more experienced than 19 years old.
His defensive intelligence, his pressing intensity and his short-passing range from La Masia training makes him ideally suited to Emery’s demanding system at Villa Park.
The Spanish youth international would slot alongside Joao Gomes, Johan Manzambi and Boubacar Kamara in what would become one of the most exciting young midfield units in the Premier League.
Whether Villa’s £30 million bid changes Barcelona’s thinking is the central question.
It probably won’t.
But Emery’s admiration is real.
The interest is more than speculation.
And the club have made their intentions official.
His next bid is coming.
