Serie A star in intensive care after nearly drowning

Preparations for the new Serie A campaign have been overshadowed by a serious incident during that weekend break.

The 2026-27 Serie A season will begin on August 22, with Inter Milan preparing to defend their league title.

The Nerazzurri won their 21st Scudetto last season and finished ahead of runners-up Napoli. Roma and Como completed the top four.

Meanwhile, Cagliari are preparing for their opening league fixture away against Parma after beginning their competitive campaign in the Coppa Italia.

Cagliari faced Arezzo on Friday before the squad received two days off ahead of their return to training.

However, preparations for the new Serie A campaign have been overshadowed by a serious incident during that weekend break.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Cagliari star Yael Trepy remains in intensive care after nearly drowning in a swimming pool in Porto Cervo.

The 20-year-old reportedly encountered difficulty after being caught out by a sudden change in the depth of the swimming pool.

Initial reports claim Trepy could not swim well and subsequently lost consciousness after getting into serious difficulty.

He received immediate assistance before an airlift urgently transported him to a hospital in Sassari, where doctors intubated him.

A chest CT scan later revealed a significant amount of water inside his lungs, making oxygen exchange difficult.

Doctors subsequently placed Trepy in a medically induced coma to prevent suffering and allow them to continue his treatment.

Cagliari remain in constant contact with both the medical facility and Trepy’s family while closely monitoring his condition.

The club have also requested privacy for Trepy and his family and will provide further updates when they become available.

Trepy had started Cagliari’s Coppa Italia match against Arezzo on Friday before the squad received their scheduled weekend break.

Cagliari were due to resume training on Monday as preparations continued for their Serie A opener away against Parma.

However, attention around the club now remains firmly on Trepy’s condition following the frightening incident in Porto Cervo.
