Liverpool identify Premier League midfielder to replace Curtis Jones

Jones’ departure has increased Liverpool’s need for another midfielder before the summer transfer window closes.

Liverpool entered the 2026-27 Premier League season under Andoni Iraola after the former Bournemouth boss replaced Arne Slot.

Their preseason campaign produced mixed results, including victories over Sunderland, Wrexham and Como before competitive action began.

However, Liverpool also suffered defeats against Leeds United and AS Monaco during their summer preparations.

The Reds then opened their Premier League campaign with a dramatic 2-2 draw away against Newcastle United on August 23.

Dominik Szoboszlai scored a stoppage-time penalty to rescue a point after Liverpool fell behind at St James’ Park.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have significantly reshaped their squad during a busy summer transfer window under Iraola.

They signed Jeremy Jacquet for £55 million, Victor Munoz for £34.5 million and Ronald Araujo on loan.

However, Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate and Andrew Robertson all departed, while Curtis Jones joined Inter Milan for £25.7 million.

Jones’ departure has increased Liverpool’s need for another midfielder before the summer transfer window closes.

According to The Independent, Liverpool have identified Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott as their top defensive midfield target.

Scott became a key player under Iraola at Bournemouth, and Liverpool have tracked his situation since the manager arrived at Anfield.

However, Bournemouth have already rejected an approach worth around £70 million and insist the midfielder is not for sale.

The south-coast club currently value Scott at around £90 million, creating a major obstacle for Liverpool this summer.

Liverpool are not currently in a position to meet that valuation and could therefore delay their move until next year.

Scott has also rejected a new contract offer from Bournemouth, leaving two years remaining on his existing deal.

Chelsea remain extremely keen on the 23-year-old, while Arsenal and Manchester United have also tracked his situation.

Therefore, waiting until next summer could carry significant risk for Liverpool if another club makes an aggressive move.
