Liverpool face a potentially dramatic end to the summer transfer window as Andoni Iraola reshapes his attacking options.
Cody Gakpo‘s future has become a major issue after Manchester City opened negotiations over a late move.
The Dutch international is open to joining Enzo Maresca’s side, with discussions continuing before the September 1 deadline.
Liverpool are prepared to sanction Gakpo’s departure, but only if they can strengthen their attack first.
The situation comes during a transitional period after Mohamed Salah departed and Iraola replaced Arne Slot this summer.
Liverpool have also endured an inconsistent Premier League start, recently drawing 2-2 against Nottingham Forest at Anfield.
Their recruitment team must therefore move quickly if Manchester City’s pursuit of Gakpo results in an agreement.
According to Football Transfers, Liverpool are in talks with representatives of Chelsea winger Pedro Neto over a potential move.
The 26-year-old features prominently among Liverpool’s possible replacements as they prepare for Gakpo’s potential departure.
Liverpool officials have contacted Neto’s agent to establish whether a late transfer to Anfield could become possible.
Neto would consider leaving Stamford Bridge if an attractive proposal arrives before the transfer window closes.
Chelsea are also willing to negotiate after significantly reshaping their squad with several new additions this summer.
However, the Blues would only consider selling Neto if they receive an offer worth at least £75 million.
The Portugal international remains contracted to Chelsea until 2031, strengthening the London club’s negotiating position.
Neto started Chelsea’s recent Premier League victory over Brighton and scored during their 4-3 win.
He has registered 20 goals across 106 appearances for Chelsea since arriving from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2024.
Liverpool are simultaneously working on a deal for Paris Saint-Germain forward Bradley Barcola as they rebuild their attack.
Neto has now emerged as a serious late option as Liverpool await the outcome of Gakpo’s Manchester City negotiations.
