Spanish police have now confirmed the tragic death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota.
It is a dark day for football. The sport has lost one of its brightest stars far too soon.
The 28-year-old Portuguese footballer died in a car crash early Thursday morning.
His brother, Andre Silva, was also in the car and sadly did not survive.
The incident happened near Palacios de Sanabria, a small area in the Zamora region of Spain.
According to reports, the car (a Lamborghini) was driving toward Benavente on the A52 highway.
That is when disaster struck. Emergency services were called just before 1 a.m. local time.
Firefighters from the Zamora provincial council rushed to the scene.
The car had already caught fire. Both passengers (Diogo Jota and Andre Silva) were pronounced dead.
As per a report on BBC, the Guardia Civil, Spain’s police force, shared more details. They said;
“The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking.
It was in the early hours, 00:30 BST, in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora.
The car caught on fire and the two occupants were killed.”
Jota had just married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, ten days ago.
Together they had three children. The young family was looking ahead to a bright future.
That future has now been torn apart.
The news has shaken the football world.
Former players, clubs, and fans are pouring in tributes.
Grief stretches beyond Merseyside.
It reaches every place Jota touched; from Porto to Wolverhampton and all the way back home.
This loss is heavy. It goes beyond football.
