Liverpool could attempt to sign Serie A star in January

Liverpool are continuing to assess midfield options ahead of the January transfer window.

Liverpool could consider further midfield reinforcements when the transfer market reopens in January.

The Reds spent heavily during Andoni Iraola’s first summer at Anfield, recording a net spend of £219 million.

Bradley Barcola arrived from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth up to £123 million following Mohamed Salah’s departure.

Liverpool also signed Victor Munoz from Osasuna for £34.5 million and Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes for £55 million.

Ronald Araujo strengthened the defence after joining on a season-long loan from Barcelona.

Iraola’s side have collected five points from their opening three Premier League matches. They drew with Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest before beating Ipswich Town 2–0.

Despite their summer recruitment, Liverpool are continuing to assess midfield options ahead of the January transfer window.

According to David Ornstein on The Athletic Podcast, Liverpool like Roma midfielder Manu Kone as one of their potential future options.

The 25-year-old France international was also considered by Chelsea during the closing stages of the summer window.

Chelsea agreed personal terms with Kone and offered Roma €65 million, equivalent to around £56 million, for the midfielder.

Roma were open to selling Kone, but manager Gian Piero Gasperini did not want to weaken his midfield options.

Chelsea subsequently turned their attention towards Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, although that proposed transfer also collapsed.

Ornstein has now suggested some failed summer deals could be revived in January. Liverpool’s interest means Kone could become another option for the Reds.

However, there is currently no indication that Liverpool have opened negotiations with Roma or submitted an offer for Kone.

Liverpool are also monitoring Camara, giving the club more than one potential midfield option ahead of future transfer windows.

Any January move for Kone could depend on Roma’s circumstances at that stage, including their European position and financial compliance.
