Liverpool make contact to sign Barcelona midfielder in January

Liverpool are looking for midfield reinforcements after Iraola identified problems in that area during the opening weeks.

Liverpool are considering further midfield changes after making substantial alterations to Andoni Iraola’s squad during the summer.

The Reds have experienced a mixed start under their new head coach, who succeeded Arne Slot before the 2026/27 campaign.

Liverpool drew with Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest before securing a 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town.

They also beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 in the Champions League before recording another goalless draw against Fulham.

Their summer recruitment focused heavily on other areas following the departure of Mohamed Salah.

Bradley Barcola arrived from Paris Saint-Germain for £123 million, while Jeremy Jacquet joined from Rennes for £60 million.

Victor Munoz also completed a £34.5 million move from Osasuna, with Ronald Araujo arriving from Barcelona on loan.

However, Curtis Jones’ move to Inter Milan reduced Iraola’s established midfield options ahead of the new campaign.

Liverpool have now taken steps towards potentially strengthening that area when the January transfer window opens.

According to El Nacional, Liverpool have contacted Barcelona over a potential January deal for Frenkie de Jong.

The report claims the Reds have already made an initial attempt worth around €40 million for the midfielder.

Barcelona rejected that proposal, despite reportedly being prepared to negotiate De Jong’s departure during the winter window.

The Catalan club are demanding at least €70 million before allowing the Netherlands international to leave.

De Jong’s position at Barcelona has changed following the arrival of Rodri, according to the report.

His injury problems and high salary have also contributed to Barcelona’s willingness to consider a transfer.

De Jong is currently recovering from a knee problem and could struggle for regular minutes once he returns.

Barcelona are prepared to negotiate, but Liverpool would need to significantly improve their opening proposal to secure a January agreement.
