Chelsea could return to the transfer market for another defender as Xabi Alonso continues reshaping his squad.
The Blues made extensive changes during the summer, with Maxence Lacroix and Marco Palestra among the defensive additions.
However, Chelsea have struggled defensively during the opening weeks of the 2026/27 campaign. They have conceded 12 Premier League goals across their first five matches.
Alonso could therefore seek further reinforcements, with a familiar Chelsea target back on the agenda.
Transfer News Live recently reported that Chelsea remain interested in Barcelona defender Jules Kounde.
The France international has been on Chelsea’s radar for several years. Alonso has now approved a potential move as he wants additional cover at right-back.
Meanwhile, Barcelona have informed Kounde’s representatives that he could leave in 2027.
CaughtOffside has now separately reported that Barcelona are under pressure to sanction sales in January, with Kounde among the players they would consider selling.
The defender has started only one LaLiga match this season, creating uncertainty surrounding his position at Camp Nou. Chelsea could benefit from that situation.
Alonso wants further depth on the right side of his defence, while uncertainty surrounding Malo Gusto provides another reason to consider Kounde.
Barcelona are prepared to sanction his departure, although the defender is not expected to force an exit. A deal could potentially develop as early as January if Barcelona decide to raise funds during the winter window.
Chelsea’s interest comes after another significant summer overhaul that dramatically changed Alonso’s squad.
The Blues sanctioned 39 departures while bringing in several new players, including Morgan Rogers, Geovany Quenda and Valentin Barco. Despite those changes, their defensive record has emerged as an early concern.
Kounde’s ability to provide another option at right-back could therefore make the long-term Chelsea target an increasingly relevant option ahead of the 2027 transfer windows.
