Liverpool have made an unbeaten start to life under Andoni Iraola this season. The Reds have collected nine points from five Premier League matches. They sit sixth after recording two victories and three draws.
However, one Liverpool player has now become involved in a political controversy during international duty.
According to the Daily Mail, Milos Kerkez and his father Sebastijan now appear on the Myrotvorets database of ‘enemies of Ukraine’.
Liverpool signed Kerkez from Bournemouth in 2025 on a five-year contract for a reported fee of £40 million.
The controversy followed Hungary’s Nations League meeting with Ukraine on September 25. Ukraine won the match 1-0 in Budapest, but several heated exchanges occurred between the players.
Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai became involved in a confrontation with Ukraine’s Victor Tsygankov.
Kerkez then approached the pair and grabbed Tsygankov by the collar during the altercation. The situation escalated after the match because of a social media post involving Kerkez’s father.
Sebastijan reportedly shared an image of the confrontation on his Instagram story. The post featured the song Russian Paradise by rapper AK-47.
Some interpreted the choice of music as referencing the ongoing conflict involving Ukraine. Both father and son were subsequently believed to have appeared on Myrotvorets.
However, the database is neither operated by nor affiliated with the Ukrainian government. The controversy prompted Hungarian deputy prime minister and foreign affairs minister Anita Orban to intervene.
She condemned the blacklisting and potential threats against Hungarian citizens. She also contacted Ukrainian representatives and the Hungarian Football Federation over the situation.
Kerkez later rejected any suggestion that he supported aggression. He explained that tensions had risen during the match.
Also, he maintained that he was defending Hungary captain Szoboszlai during the confrontation. Kerkez missed Hungary’s 2-1 victory in the reverse fixture through suspension.
