Pep Guardiola will forever be regarded as one of the most important figures in Barcelona’s history, having enjoyed extraordinary success at the club both as a player and a manager.
The Spaniard spent more than a decade representing Barcelona’s first team, winning six La Liga titles and the European Cup in 1992 as part of Johan Cruyff’s famous Dream Team.
However, it was his achievements as manager that cemented his reputation as one of the greatest coaches in football history.
Taking charge in 2008, Guardiola transformed Barcelona into arguably the finest team of its generation, with Lionel Messi, Xavi and Andres Iniesta at the heart of a side that dominated European football.
During his four years in charge, Barcelona won 14 trophies, including three La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues.
His success subsequently took him to Bayern Munich and Manchester City, where he continued to collect major honours and establish himself among the most decorated managers in the game.
Despite spending so many years away from the Catalan club, Guardiola has never hidden his affection for Barcelona, with his connection to the club and its supporters remaining strong.
And on Friday night, the 55-year-old made a return to Barcelona that attracted plenty of attention from those in attendance.
However, the occasion had nothing to do with football management.
Instead, Guardiola was spotted courtside at the Palau Blaugrana watching Barcelona’s basketball team take on Olympiacos in the EuroLeague.
The former Barcelona manager was enjoying the game when supporters noticed him in the crowd during the second quarter.
As his presence became known around the arena, fans began chanting his name, with the reception eventually developing into a standing ovation.
Pep Guardiola rose from his seat, smiling as he acknowledged the supporters, raising both arms and blowing kisses towards the crowd.
The moment was captured on camera, with Sky Sports sharing footage of Guardiola’s appearance.
It was a reminder of the affection Barcelona supporters still hold for their former player and manager, more than 14 years after he stepped down from his coaching role at the club.
Guardiola was also treated to an entertaining contest, although Barcelona ultimately suffered a 105-100 defeat to Olympiacos after overtime.
Following the match, Olympiacos star Sasha Vezenkov, who scored 25 points, approached Guardiola and asked for a photograph with him, which the Spaniard happily agreed to.
Guardiola has previously attended Barcelona basketball games and is known to be a keen follower of the sport, having also expressed his admiration for basketball figures including Michael Jordan.
While his appearance on Friday was simply an opportunity to enjoy a basketball match, the reception demonstrated that Pep Guardiola remains one of Barcelona’s most celebrated figures.
And judging by the reaction inside the Palau Blaugrana, he will always receive a warm welcome whenever he returns.
