There has been one former Premier League midfielder who has made a surprise move away from one of Europe’s top leagues.
It was the season of dreams for Paris Saint-Germain in 2024/25.
The club secured their first ever Champions League, dominating Inter Milan in the final, winning 5-0 in Munich.
They ended the season with a 3-0 loss to Chelsea in the FIFA Club World Cup final.
However, their defeat in New Jersey should not deter the fanbase in Paris from what was a monumental season.
With a league title and French Cup as well, they secured their first treble in club history, with attacker Ousmane Dembélé one of the favourites for the Ballon d’Or.
As their stock amongst Europe’s best increases, they will have players become collateral damage, and one of their players has made a move away from the club.
Former Premier League star makes surprising move
It has been announced that former Swansea City midfielder Renato Sanches has joined Greek side Panathinaikos from PSG on a season long loan.
Sanches struggled immensely during his loan spell with Swansea back in 2017, infamously passing to the advertising board in a League Cup game against Chelsea.
This was a year after securing a €35 million move to Bayern Munich from Benfica.
Sanches rebuild his reputation at French side Lille and earned a move to PSG in 2022.
Despite making 23 league appearances in his first season, he has failed to kick a ball for the club since.
Sanches, spent last season on loan at Roma and now will play in Greece in the 2025/26 campaign.
He appears far away from PSG manager Luis Enrique’s plans.
