Manchester City have made a mixed start to the new season. Pep Guardiola’s men are still searching for consistency, with the squad not yet looking fully settled.
The campaign began with a heavy defeat against Brighton. City did manage to bounce back with a solid derby win over Manchester United. But the performances have raised questions about their long-term plans.
That is why the focus has now shifted to the future of one of Guardiola’s most trusted players.
According to reports, Manchester City have opened talks with Bernardo Silva over a new contract.
The Portuguese midfielder joined the Citizens in 2017. He arrived from AS Monaco for close to £43 million.
Since then, he has made more than 411 appearances in all competitions for City. Silva also scored over 72 goals and provided 74 assists.
Bernardo can operate from the midfield as well as right wing, has made him a key figure at the Etihad. Guardiola himself has described him as “fundamental” to City’s project.
After Kevin de Bruyne left the club, Guardiola made Bernardo Silva the Manchester City captain. However, there is a major concern. His current deal expires in June 2026.
From January, clubs outside England will be able to negotiate with him directly. This raises the risk of City losing him on a free transfer.
Juventus are keeping a close eye on the situation. Also, his boyhood club Benfica are also showing interest.
However, City are determined to avoid that scenario. They want to tie Bernardo down to a fresh deal that would secure his future beyond 2026.
At 31, the midfielder still has plenty to offer. But he now faces a key decision.
Silva needs to decide whether he wants tp stay with Guardiola and push for more trophies at Manchester City, or take on a new challenge in Europe.
