Chelsea made a promising start to the season. But recent results have raised serious questions.
After winning two of their first three matches, the club has picked up just one win from their last five.
The only victory in that stretch came in the EFL Cup against Lincoln City. They came back from behind in that match.
Now, attention has turned to the dugout. Enzo Maresca has come under fire in recent weeks.
Poor results and defensive issues have sparked speculation over his position.
But according to transfer expert Ben Jacobs, the Chelsea hierarchy remain calm.
The board and sporting directors are still backing Maresca. They believe ups and downs are part of any season. For now, they are not planning a change.
The Blues opened the season with a goalless draw against Crystal Palace. Some fans felt it was a missed opportunity. They followed that with a big win against West Ham.
Against Fulham, a disallowed goal for their opponents could have changed the game but Chelsea still earned a 2–0 win. Since then, things have gone downhill.
A 2–2 draw with Brentford and a 3–1 loss to Bayern Munich exposed their defensive flaws. The defeat to Bayern was not a shock but the performance raised concern.
Also, losses to Manchester United and Brighton only added pressure. In both matches, Chelsea were reduced to 10 men. That has complicated the narrative around Maresca’s position.
Some believe the club’s recruitment is more to blame. Defensive depth remains an issue. Robert Sanchez continues to underperform in goal. Injuries to key defenders have made matters worse.
Still, Maresca’s tactics and in-game management have drawn criticism. Chelsea face Benfica on Tuesday in the Champions League.
But the Premier League clash with Liverpool on Saturday looms large. Cole Palmer will miss out through injury.
Enzo Maresca retains the full support of Chelsea’s leadership following the losses to Bayern, Manchester United and Brighton.
4/5 Chelsea defeats in the past six months have had red cards in them, which are viewed as playing a part.
