There are moments in life when applause comes not for trophies, but for choices made out of love.
For Paul Scholes, the decision to step away from the spotlight was never about fame or fatigue. It was about family.
At 50, the former Manchester United midfielder has decided to walk away from television punditry altogether.
Scholes opened up about his decision during an appearance on The Overlap YouTube show.
Sitting alongside Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Jill Scott, and Ian Wright, he revealed the deep personal reason behind this quiet but powerful choice.
For years, he had lived by a routine. Three nights a week, he looks after his adult son, while his former wife, Claire, does the same on alternate days. Claire’s mother takes over the remaining night.
During the show, the football icon shared how this commitment shaped his world. His son was diagnosed with autism at just two and a half years old.
The diagnosis, Paul Scholes said, had even affected parts of his playing career. But through every phase of life, he never stopped being a father first.
He has not appeared as a pundit for TNT Sports this season. His last appearance came during last year’s Europa League final between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Thursday nights, he explained, were particularly hard, as those were nights meant for his son.
The Manchester United legend said his entire schedule now revolves around his son, Aiden, who is non-verbal and has a strict daily routine. Scholes said:
“I made a decision this year because of Aiden and his special needs. All the work I do now is just around his routines.”
Scholes also admitted that the situation is hard to handle for him at times. Yet, he also said: “But you just keep going.”
