The Premier League always maintain a strong stance when it comes to racism. The FA also runs the ‘No Room For Racism’ campaign.
It aims to free football from racism and also combat the problem of racism within society. However, one ex-player of the Premier League is now at the centre of a racism row.
French football has been rocked by a racism controversy following a heated Ligue 1 encounter between Le Havre and Toulouse.
Former Premier League midfielder Didier Digard, now manager of Le Havre, has accused opposing winger Aron Donnum of making a racist gesture towards his player Simon Ebonog.
The incident occurred late in the goalless draw, when Donnum appeared to wave his hand in front of Ebonog’s face.
Moreover, Digard and Le Havre condemned the action as “disgusting” and “unacceptable,” calling for an immediate review by the match officials and the French football authorities.
According to reports, Digard argued that the gesture went beyond football, questioning how such behaviour could go unpunished.
He insisted the act carried racial undertones and that allowing it to pass without review sent the wrong message.
Therefore, he demanded that the league take the matter seriously and investigate using available VAR technology.
In this regard, it is worth mentioning that the VAR in the Premier League is set for a major change.
Furthermore, the Le Havre coach expressed disappointment at being shown a yellow card for protesting, stating that his only aim was to defend his player.
The club later released an official statement describing Ebonog as a “victim” and calling for respect and accountability from officials.
Toulouse, however, have firmly denied all accusations of racism. The club defended Donnum, describing the claims as “unfounded and particularly serious.”
Also, they reaffirmed their commitment to fighting discrimination and maintaining inclusivity within football.
Thus, the Ligue 1 clash has now sparked widespread debate across France, with fans and pundits split over whether the act was racist or misunderstood.
