Controversy and Manchester City are going hand-in-hand at the moment. The verdict for their 155 charges is yet to arrive.
Now, one of their record signings from the past has been arrested for the fourth time.
However, on the pitch, Pep Guardiola is reviving their season after a slow start. The win against the Premier League champions Liverpool was a statement.
Now, the Citizens are just four points behind the league leaders, Arsenal. But one of their former stars is at the centre of a legal battle once again.
Jo, full name Joao Alves de Assis Silva, the former Manchester City record signing, was detained for the fourth time over unpaid child support.
He had already been arrested twice in Campinas and once in Contagem last year for similar issues.
According to The Mirror, one of his former partners, Maiara Quiderolly, reacted to previous arrests by criticising his inconsistent payments.
In a video posted on social media, she complained about late transfers and changing amounts, saying it was “always torture” to secure what was legally required.
At the same time, Jo’s football journey remains one of the most varied of any Brazilian forward of his generation.
After emerging in Europe with CSKA Moscow, he joined Manchester City in 2008 for £19 million, becoming the club’s record signing under Mark Hughes.
He scored just six goals in 42 games before loan spells at Everton and Galatasaray.
His career revived after returning to Brazil, where he starred for Atlético Mineiro and rejoined the national team. He played at the 2014 World Cup, earning 20 caps in total.
Jo retired for the second time earlier this year after a stint with fourth-division side Itabirito.
His arrest count now stands at four, with the latest case once again tied to unpaid maintenance.
The investigation continues, and authorities expect further action if the debts remain unresolved.
