Chelsea are one of the biggest football clubs in England. They have fans throughout the world.
However, their home ground, Stamford Bridge, holds just over 40,000 people. So, there has been a cry for a bigger stadium with more capacity.
Now, Chelsea have not fully ruled out the possibility of leaving Stamford Bridge. The Blues are continuing to explore alternative stadium options.
The reason for that is the mounting obstacles they are facing around a potential move to Earls Court.
The Blues deemed the west London site as the most prominent alternative should Chelsea decide against redeveloping their current home.
Stamford Bridge has a capacity far lower than what the home ground of a club like Chelsea should have.
However, Stamford Bridge expansion is a difficult project due to its location. Thus, relocating to a different venue becomes a logical move. And, the Blues are dwelling on it.
However, recent developments have significantly complicated any prospect of a move.
The Earl’s Court Development Company has now secured its second planning approval for a £10bn regeneration project. This follows the earlier approval from the Hammersmith and Fulham council.
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea granted its consent this week, effectively clearing the way for construction to begin in 2026.
An ECDC spokesperson told BBC Sport that there is ‘no opportunity for a football stadium as part of the approved masterplan now or in the future’.
The spokesperson also stresses that the project will focus on housing, jobs, culture, and open spaces.
Despite reports questioning the source of the funds for the development, there is strong political and local backing for the scheme.
Chelsea have yet to comment publicly, but remain committed to improving Stamford Bridge.
It has been a requirement included in the terms of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital’s takeover of the club in 2022.
For now, rebuilding on the existing site appears to be the most realistic path forward.
