A former Chelsea manager has undergone heart surgery after doctors discovered an irregular heartbeat.
The 66-year-old had the procedure carried out in Rome. His current club have confirmed the operation was successful and expect him to return to work soon.
The manager underwent a catheter ablation procedure after being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation.
The condition causes a fast and irregular heartbeat and can lead to tiredness, breathing problems, and an increased risk of stroke.
SS Lazio released a statement confirming the surgery of Maurizio Sarri. They said Sarri was treated at the Tor Vergata Polyclinic and that the operation had a positive outcome.
Professor Andrea Natale carried out the procedure. He is a leading specialist in treating the condition. Lazio added that Sarri can resume his duties in the coming days.
Sarri’s time at Chelsea was short but memorable. He spent one season at Stamford Bridge and became known for his possession-based style, often referred to as Sarri-ball.
However, that campaign was not without controversy. His Chelsea team lost the Carabao Cup final to Chelsea. But Kepa Arrizabalaga refused to come off during penalties. And that incident made headlines.
Sarri left Chelsea in the summer of 2019 to join Juventus. He won the Serie A title with the Old Lady. But he got the sack after just one season.
After a spell away from management, Sarri returned to Lazio in June on a two-year deal. Despite a summer transfer embargo, the club sit eighth in Serie A heading into the winter break.
Assistant coach Marco Ianni will oversee training until Sarri returns. So, in Lazio’s next league match against Napoli on January 4, Ianni will be at the dugout.
Lazio confirmed that Sarri will resume his regular role soon and thanked the medical team for their care and professionalism.
