Chelsea suffer transfer blow as target set to sign new contract

Chelsea will miss out on a player they wanted since last summer.

Chelsea look set to miss out on a long-standing transfer target. After appointing Liam Rosenior as their next manager, the club wants to back him.

That is why they are ready to make some bold moves in this January transfer market. They have already reportedly joined the race for Marc Guehi.

The Blues are also eyeing a double swoop to bolster the squad of Rosenior. They are looking at a Barcelona and an AC Milan attacker in a £130 million swoop.

Chelsea are yet to make a move for those two players. However, they will miss out on a player they wanted since last summer.

Their previous manager Enzo Maresca wanted to sign a new goalkeeper. And, the Italian knew the player he need. However, that player is now close to signing a new deal with his current club.

Yes, AC Milan closing in on a new contract agreement with their captain Mike Maignan. The French goalkeeper has been on Chelsea’s radar for some time.

Maignan had been widely expected to leave Milan on a free transfer, with little progress made on a renewal throughout 2025. However, the Rossoneri have now stepped up their efforts.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Milan are in advanced talks with the 30-year-old over a new five-year deal, although they have not reached the final agreement yet.

This news will come as a clear disappointment for Chelsea. The Blues submitted a €15 million bid, which was Milan rejected swiftly.

Despite reports suggesting Maignan was open to the move, Milan refused to budge and the Blues did not return with an improved offer later in the window.

Unless talks collapse unexpectedly, Chelsea may now have to look elsewhere for a new goalkeeper, with Milan confident they are close to securing the future of one of their most important players.
