Sevilla endured a disastrous 2024/25 campaign, struggling for consistency across all their domestic competitions.
Having just escaped relegation on the final day, many were certain that the Spanish giant would bounce back this season.
However, that’s not been the case.
Although Sevilla have improved drastically from their 17th place finish last season, they currently sit in 12th, with only five points separating them from the drop.
Losing once in their last six games does show signs of improvement, however the seven-time UEFA Europa League winners may look to find themselves missing out on European football again.
With financial constraints still a factor, Sevilla appear determined to move smartly in the market rather than spend heavily.
This comes after Sevilla closed the 2024/25 season reporting losses exceeding £50 million, leading to a further increase in debts.
Nevertheless, with a renewed focus on recruitment and development, there’s growing optimism that Sevilla can return to their competitive best ahead of next season.
That approach now appears to have led them to South America, where an agreement has been reached for a highly-rated young midfielder.
Sevilla have officially announced that they’ve reached an agreement to sign Ecuador midfielder Patrik Mercado from Independiente del Valle for a fee of £5.2 million.
Despite not being widely known in European football, the 22-year-old has attracted interest from several clubs, including Premier League side Chelsea.
The Blues, who already boast Ecuadorians Moises Caicedo and Kendry Paez, were keen on signing Mercado, but the midfielder will be playing in Andalucia from next season instead.
The youngster recorded 7 goals and 11 assists last season for Independiente del Valle, and is set to play in the upcoming World Cup, with Ecuador.
Registering Mercado comes with several issues, however.
As Sevilla have financial issues, they will need to free up significant salary space by selling one of their more high profile players.
Sevilla will also need to have a non-EU player slot available, something they currently lack, as Mercado will join Los Rojiblancos for the 2026/27 season.
While there are still some legal bits and pieces to sort out, Sevilla fans will hope that all will be sorted and that Patrik Mercado will be showing what he can do at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium next season.
