Eddie Howe is set to leave Newcastle United after almost five years in charge.
The 48-year-old transformed the club after replacing Steve Bruce in November 2021. He inherited a winless team sitting 19th in the Premier League table.
However, Howe quickly changed Newcastle’s direction and guided them away from relegation trouble.
The following season brought another major step forward. Newcastle finished fourth and secured Champions League football for the first time in two decades.
Moreover, Howe strengthened the team with an intense and aggressive playing style. Several key players also developed into leading figures during his reign. His biggest achievement arrived in 2025.
Newcastle defeated Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final and ended their 70-year domestic trophy drought. That victory secured Howe’s place in the club’s modern history.
However, last season proved much more difficult. Newcastle finished 13th in the Premier League after losing 17 matches.
They also suffered two painful defeats against local rivals Sunderland during a turbulent domestic campaign.
Still, Newcastle reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals and the Champions League round of 16.
The club have since started another major rebuild following several important departures.
Sandro Tonali joined Tottenham Hotspur for £92.5M, while Anthony Gordon completed a £69M move to Barcelona. Kieran Trippier also left Newcastle after his contract expired.
Meanwhile, financial restrictions and the absence of European football have affected Newcastle’s summer plans. Now, the club must also find a new manager.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Howe will part ways with Newcastle with immediate effect. The club have already started talks over his replacement.
Romano also reports that major changes are expected at St James’ Park following the decision.
The current Al-Ahli manager Matthias Jaissle has emerged as a possible successor. However, Newcastle have not yet confirmed their next appointment.
Howe leaves after turning Newcastle from relegation candidates into Champions League qualifiers and trophy winners.
His departure now opens another significant chapter as the club continues its summer rebuild.
