Achraf Hakimi has become the subject of major headlines after a French appeals court ruled that the Paris Saint-Germain defender would stand trial over rape allegations dating back to February 2023.
The decision followed a lengthy judicial investigation and represented a significant development in one of football’s highest-profile legal cases. However, Hakimi has consistently denied the allegations.
His legal team previously stated that the player was eager for the matter to reach trial so he could publicly defend himself against what they described as a false accusation.
Now, the Morocco captain has spoken personally for the first time since the court’s ruling. In a statement posted on social media, Achraf Hakimi said:
“Justice looked me in the eyes and said to me: ‘If you weren’t famous, there never would have been a case.'”
“I chose to remain silent for years. I thought that staying dignified, being patient, and trusting the justice system would allow the right decisions to be made.”
“Today, a story that is not mine is being told at the expense of my family, my life, and above all, the truth. Sometimes I feel like I’ve become an easy target.”
“I’ve been waiting for this trial since day one. And now I’m looking forward to it.
“Finally, I will be able to speak.”
The statement comes after the Versailles Court of Appeal confirmed that there was sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial.
For now, Hakimi remains with the Morocco squad at the World Cup. The Atlas Lions are now preparing for a crucial clash against Scotland after a 1-1 draw against Brazil.
